Sunday 17th May 2015 is national children’s day which is looking to spread the word about how important play is to children. It’s not just about them having fun. On the national children’s day website they explain that “Play is so important to optimal child development that it has been recognised by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child (Article 31)”
So in celebration of the importance of play, I’ve put together this list of my 3 favourite ‘play’ quotes!
1) “Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity”
2) “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood”
3) “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing”
Do you have a favourite quote about play? Do you like the three quotes I’ve found? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

I totally agree. I’m a huge fan of child led play and the importance of this in children’s development. It is for sure a necessity. Angela
Angela recently posted “Ways to increase your child’s interest in reading” http://wp.me/p5XRN6-1mG
I think that’s the key a lot of the time, the play being ‘child-led’ rather than us telling them what to do/how to play. That’s how they really learn! x
Three fantastic quotes Madeline. I couldn’t agree more – children learn so much through playing. And it’s fun learning so they don’t even realize what they gain from play. Thank you so much for linking up with #candidcuddles I really enjoyed reading your quotes this morning xx
Thank you, they’re fab quotes aren’t they! Thank you for organising the quote link up, I love quotes! x
Love these, especially the George Bernard Shaw one! #candidcuddles

I think that’s possibly the most well known of the quotes, and so true! Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to photography and other creative pursuits, because it feels like I’m playing, and if I keep playing then I won’t grow old! x
What a great theme for a quote post! I agree that play is such an important factor in child development. It’s a natural way for children to use their imaginations, problem solve, learn about the world around them, and be creative! #candidcuddles
Play really is incredibly important isn’t it, when you see all the benefits written down like that! x
I love the last one. It’;s so true!
It’s a great quote isn’t it! x
I love that my kids love playing outside. Yes they have tablets and I am proud to say that they haven’t even asked to play with them for over a week now because the weather has been so nice outside. I love watching them explore around and use their imaginations to build forts and lots of other pretend play. And they love to make mud! Great quotes. I am popping over from #candidcuddles ;))
Outside play especially teaches them so much about the world doesn’t it! I’ve found it hard at times not to be overprotective with my son when he wants to explore and climb outside, but it is the best way for him to learn about what he’s capable of and to start assessing risk for himself! x
Great quotes! Thanks for focussing on children’s play – I’ll be sharing these with my mum, who knows the importance of play only too well. She’s going to be looking after two of my nieces soon, so I’m sure she’ll love these!
Thank you, I hope your mum enjoys the quotes! And I bet she’ll have a lot of fun looking after your nieces! x
Great quotes that I completely agree with. Totally by coincidence I have the same quote as you in the post I linked to #candidcuddles – your second one about play being the work of childhood. I love this quote and it seems to apply so fittingly to my daughter when I watch her playing with an expression of such seriousness and utter concentration!
Haha, great minds think alike! It’s funny how serious they can look when they’re playing isn’t it! x
Love the last one about growing old!! #candidcuddles
It’s great isn’t it! Good reason to keep on playing! x
These quotes are brilliant, especially love the one about being old because we don’t play – I try and be silly either in my head or out loud at least once a day! lol

Haha, sounds like you’ve got the right approach to life! x
Hello Madeline,
Unfortunately the simple play it’s vanishing from our kids life, now they just want computer games, tablets, etc.
It’s always good to read this quotes and let us remind of good times and maybe get our kids to know how good it is to simply play.
xx Marta
That’s a very good point, it’s so important to encourage our children to get away from all those screens! x
